The Association Miradouro da Luz is a not-for-profit organization that aims to protect green and natural spaces for public use in Luz and Lagos area of Portugal, supporting only sustainable and harmonious urban development.

In the last two decades, the municipality of Lagos has been characterized by a somewhat moderate urban development that has been progressively altering the original landscape without causing an upheaval or an abrupt social outrage.
Little by little, some of the spaces that were previously free of construction are being occupied by various complexes composed of buildings of varied nature and different purposes ranging from housing to some tourist complexes. Over the past two decades, the end of the 90s and the first decades of the 21st century, the most diverse buildings have been built in Lagos in various parts of the city, some with a greater visual impact and others that go more unnoticed.

The truth is that such urban development has taken place without much public challenge and there has even been an acceptance of landscape changes as the consequence of a need imposed by the welcome economic development.
To the expectation of economic growth are added the characteristics of buildings whose height has been limited, which means that people do not feel the urban space as an aggressive invader of the natural space.

For a long time we have subscribed to a similar understanding.
Apparently Lagos would not suffer from the irreversible and damaging errors seen in other cities in the Algarve or located on the coast.
But after a detailed and rigorous analysis of the reality of the city, we conclude that, after all, we cannot consider the way urbanism developed in Lagos so innocuous.

After an analysis of the history of planning, planning and land management in Lagos, we were really frightened by the huge urban plans for the future, many of these plans planned scrupulously, in recent years, by collusion between political means and some of the companies more powerful financially. And we conclude that the next few years will be crucial years for urbanism in Lagos.

We are faced with the existence of countless construction projects envisaged for the coming years that will end up transforming Lagos into a different city from the one we know.
Instead of an option to follow a corrective urban experience, the realization of the same mistakes that were made in other cities and that caused enormous damage at the environmental, urban and economic level, is approached.
Maintaining natural beauty through a sustainable urban vision is the only way to keep our cities attractive and to promote economic development and social well-being.
And we are accountable to future generations.

IT WILL BE OUR OBJECTIVE TO MAKE THE ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES MORE TRANSPARENT, TO BRING THEM TO THE PUBLIC, TO APPEAL TO PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AND TO FIGHT AGAINST URBANISTIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL ABERRATIONS.
We also intend to inform and make public the methods and mechanisms appropriate for the pursuit of environmental protection and urban sustainability of our city.
And we will also endeavor to go on exposing some historical details about the urban options already implemented and which we will have to face in the future.

We would love to hear from you!
